CHEATS, HINTS AND PLAYING TIPS

NAME CHEATS

Cheat Notes:
*Titan Hotrod: Also unlocks all cars in test drive and versus modes. The game can not be saved when this code is in use.
*Phantom car: The car will be available in Hot Pursuit mode. The game can not be saved when this code is in use.
*Helicopter: The helicopter will be available in Test Drive mode. Enabling this code will disable the option to save your game. To fly the helicopter without disabling the save option, see the unlocking hint below.

BUTTON COMBINATION CHEATS
Dashboard view: Press Start to load the race after selecting the game options, then immediately hold Up + Triangle + X before the loading screen appears. Keep the buttons held until the loading screen disappears. A dashboard will now appear in the in-car view.
Remove race statistics screen: Hold Triangle for a few seconds during a race to make the statistics (time, speed, radar, etc.) disappear. To display them again, hold Triangle.
Turbo boost: For the turbo boost without the dashboard view, or when in two player mode: Press Start to load the race after selecting the game options, then immediately hold Up + Triangle + Square before the loading screen appears. Keep the buttons held until the loading screen disappears. Then, press Up during game play.
Drunk mode: Press Start to load the race after selecting the game options, then immediately hold Up + R1 + L2 before the loading screen appears. Keep the buttons held until the loading screen disappears. The screen will become blurred, with ten cars appearing in place of one.
Heavier car: Select single race, test drive, or high pursuit mode. Press Start to load the race after selecting the game options, then immediately hold Left + Square + Circle before the loading screen appears. Keep the buttons held until the loading screen disappears. Your car will become heavier, allowing you to run into other cars and send them flying. This is especially useful in the open road special events.
Slow CPU cars: Select tournament or special events mode. Press Start to load the race after selecting the game options, then immediately hold Left + Square + Circle before the loading screen appears. Keep the buttons held until the loading screen disappears. Alternately, hold Right + Circle + Square.

UNLOCKING HINTS
Phantom car: Successfully complete all the tournaments with gold trophies to use the phantom car in tournament and special events mode.
Helicopter: Successfully complete Hot Pursuit mode with the Lamborghini Diablo Cop Car.
Titan Hotrod: Successfully complete all the special events with gold trophies.
Drive any car in any tournament: Successfully complete all the tournaments. Additionally, select "Options" at the car select screen to choose upgraded opponents.
Bonus police cars: Complete the Hot Pursuit with each type of police car to unlock a new car (Chevy Caprice: Corvette, BMW M5: Porche 911, Porche 911: Lamborghini Diablo, Lamborghini Diablo: Whirly the Helicopter).... In the police mode in hot pursuit mode, get ten cars within the time limit. You will be able to activate the "Super police cars mode" which gives you special cars on hot pursuit.

EASY MONEY ABD CAR METHODS
Method 1: Have at least two cars or one car and $20,000 saved to a memory card. Use the "Easy money" hint to earn some money. Sell the cars that you have won. Buy a car, but do not save it on your memory card. Use the "Easy money" hint. You will be able to use the car owned when saved. After one win, you will now have both of those cars, plus the one(s) that you bought with the money from the first one. You now have one extra car.
Method 2: Requires two memory cards. You need to own at least one car and have enough money ($20,000) to buy a new car. Once this is accomplished, copy the Need For Speed 4 file to another memory card. While both memory cards are in the PlayStation, race in the High Stakes mode and have player two intentionally forfeit at the beginning of the race. Player one should now have two of the same car. Copy the saved data to the other card again and repeat. You can then sell all your cars for a large amount of money.
Method 3: To perform this trick with only one memory card, enter high stakes mode and the game will search port one for a memory card before checking port two. If there is no card in port two, the game will prompt you to retry. Simply remove the card from port one and insert it into port two to have double the cars.

GENERAL HINTS AND PLAYING TIPS
Unlimited money: Play the game in two player High Stakes mode and keep raising money until you can buy two of each car. After this point, every time a tournament or a single race is entered you will have three McLaren F1 GTRs. Sell one to build your total cash. After selling one of those cars, go to a race in a single race mode. Race, then go back to the car dealer. Three McLarens will be there.
Gold Diablo SV chase: Select Hot Pursuit mode under the expert skill level. Begin game play and look for a road block with a Super Cop with gold Diablo SV with blue and yellow lights instead of the silver Corvette with red and blue lights.
Special event skip: Once the BMW Z3 Special Event has been successfully completed, you need to enter the Tournament with the Camaro and Firebirds. Forfeit the first race when it starts, then repeat this with all the remaining races. Once this has been completed, you can go to the special event and win with your Camaro/Firebird.
Extra hot pursuit time: Do not enter a name to get more time in single player hot pursuit mode.
Hot pursuit mode items: When playing the cop in hot pursuit mode, L1 during the chase and a small item box will appear in the bottom right corner. Keep L1 held and press a button for backup, road blocks, etc.
Quick resume: Press Select after crashing to quickly return to the middle of the road. This is very useful after crashing into a wall that you must back up from before continuing.
Eliminate Nemesis: Enable the "Heavier car" code (and optionally, the "Turbo boost" code). If Nemesis is in first place, slam or spin his car so that one of the other cars is in first, your car is in second, and his car is in any other position. Nemesis should fall back slightly. Regain first place without Nemesis passing you. Nemesis should fall back into last or second to last place and will trail behind the pack. He will remain in this position as long as he does not pass your car. If this is done during a tournament race, he will remain in that position for the rest of the tournament.
Easier Hot Pursuit arrests: Press L1 + Up to turn off the sirens in your police car in hot pursuit mode. The speeder should begin to slow down. Turn the sirens back on after your car is in position to arrest the driver.... Another way to make Hot Pursuit arrest easier is to enable the "Turbo boost" and the "Heavier car" codes. To do this, enable the "Turbo boost" code for a single race or test drive. Then, enable the "Heavier car" code for the Hot Pursuit. Make sure damage is set to "on". Use the turbo to catch up with the speeder, then ram the car. After doing this several times, if you have not caught him already, the speeder will begin to slow down greatly.
Saving money: Save the game before entering big competitions. When you crash in a tournament or special event and do not want to pay, simply reset the PlayStation.
Activate lights: Hold L1 and press Left or Right to use the turn signals. Hold L1 and press Up to turn on the headlights. Hold L1 and press Down to turn on the hazard lights.... When you drive in the dark, you will always have your lights on. You can turn them bigger and smaller by pressing Up. Press L1 + Up to turn them completely off. Once they are off, press Up and you will be in the dark.
Activate horn: Press Up to beep your horn. To use the horn at night, use a Dual Shock controller. Press Analog, then L3 or R3.
Easy turning: To prevent too much sliding while turning, pause game play. When the game is resumed, your car will automatically straighten up.
Power slide: If you are going around a tight corner, press Triangle and you will slide into place. This is most useful in kindermak Park at the hair pin turn.
Burn rubber: Press Square + X to burn rubber.
